As the days are getting shorter and winter approaches to envelop us in its cosy darkness, we search for things to brighten our days. With a pair of off-white slippers you don’t have to look further than your feet. It has actually been shown that being exposed to brighter colours helps improve your mood and especially during winter, we need as much dopamine as we can get. Bright colours are like caffeine for your eyes, it can lift your mood and prevent the sense of gloom that some associate with winter.
Even though Denmark is one of the smaller countries in Europe, they actually have a word that is uniquely theirs. The word is “hygge” and it doesn’t translate directly into any other language. The closest word in the English language for instance is “cosy” or “homely”. It is a feeling or an atmosphere, a state of mind when you are totally relaxed, comfortable and safe. It is all about slowing down, enjoying the moment and being present. Danes are experts when it comes to feeling this way and can find “hygge” in many situations. It can be over a good cup of coffee with a friend, having a night in with your loved ones playing games, watching a movie or eating good food, or something as simple as having a laugh in the break room at work with your coworkers. It can be found anywhere really, whether alone or with people around you.
With a pair of glerups slippers on your feet, “hygge” is bound to ensue. With their softness and comfort, you will soon find how much good leisure footwear can affect your mood and sense of relaxation.
The main star in the production of glerups footwear is our unique natural wool blend. Made with natural wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand, this blend is packed with beneficial properties, making them more comfortable than a lot of other footwear in this category. The wool itself has an incredible softness to it, but that’s not all. The fibres in the wool can redirect heat, meaning that the slippers will keep your feet cool when it’s warm, and not just warm them on colder days. Any excess heat and moisture for that matter is absorbed by the wool and then released again, when the slippers get a rest, preferably a place with fresh air. Wool in itself is mostly self cleansing, which makes them easy to maintain. Even a thing is a bad odour from the feet is no longer an issue, when wearing glerups, as the wool also absorbs that.
This leads us to another thing about footwear from glerups in general. The wool is a robust material that is meant to last for more than just a single season. Providing it is well taken care of, which is easy, it can last longer than footwear made of other materials. For more information on how to maintain your slippers the best, read here.
Another thing about the fibres of the wool is that their molecular structure is in close resemblance to the human skin, meaning you are less likely to get irritated skin when wearing it.
The Danes have always had a subtle way of getting noticed internationally through art and design. From the Sydney Opera House designed by Danish architect Utzon, to world renowned toys from Lego, Danes have gained international attention by designing products that last. There is a common denominator for all Danish design – it adheres to Danish design philosophy, which is also the case for footwear from glerups.
Danish design philosophy entails making things of a certain durability with easily accessible material, and the end result must be simple, functional and elegant. This might as well be a description of footwear from glerups in general. They have simple aesthetics, with their seamless design and soft lines. They are functional due to the many occasions they can be used in and are practical as they can be used all year. Their elegance is found in how subtle they fit into any wardrobe or style and the many discreet colours to choose from, all inspired by Nordic nature.
